Winter Truck Maintenance

It’s important to keep up with maintenance year-round. However, when it comes to the low temperatures of winter time, it’s important to keep the mechanical parts of your truck in good shape so they don’t fall victim to the elements. Breakdowns, dead batteries, and flat tires are more common in fluctuating temperatures, so here’s what we recommend you do to prevent a sudden emergency.

Batteries

Often in low temperatures, the battery is the first thing to go. This is because winter can reduce battery capacity. If your truck’s battery life was already on the way out, this can impact it dramatically. Check your battery capacity and replace it if need be to avoid getting stranded with a dead battery.

Visibility

Things like wiper blades, wiper fluid reservoir, and the defroster are important because they help drivers maintain visibility. In addition to the above, drivers should also check to make sure all exterior lights are functioning and clean out the light casing. Because winter causes the days to shorten, drivers spend a lot more time driving in the dark, which means their lights need to be in top shape.

Check Fluids

Engine oil is something that should be checked and replaced regularly year-round, but things like brake fluid, wiper fluid, and coolant should also be investigated. Drivers can replace their usual wiper fluid with ice-resistant wiper fluid, while coolant, or antifreeze, is important because it maintains engine temperature.

Tires

Tires are especially important in slippery road conditions. Under- or over-inflated tires can cause slipping on ice, and old, worn tires won’t have enough tread to properly grip the road. Consider investing in winter tires, with deeper tread for more confidence even in ice and snow. Also, routinely check your tire pressure since extreme temperatures can cause them to lose pressure faster.
