Choosing A Light-Duty or Heavy-Duty Truck

If you’re in the market for a pickup truck, you might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. Even single brands, like Ford, will have multiple types of trucks in their same lineup. It can be tough to come to a clear decision. For example, Ford has both the light-duty F-150 and the heavy-duty Super Duty models like the F-250 and F-350. Which is best for you? Thankfully, we’ve done your homework for you.

Cost

If your top concern is your budget, it’s probably better to opt for the light-duty Ford F-150. Not only is it more affordable at its entry-level trim than its larger siblings, but the F-150 also has more trims with more standard features. Even the luxurious range-topping trims have tons of value and amenities that make the extra cash worth it and give it good resale value even years later.

Handling

When it comes to maneuverability, a light-duty truck is going to win again. For inexperienced truck drivers, heavy-duty trucks can feel bulky and unwieldy on the road, as well as difficult to maneuver into cramped parking spots. A lot of heavy-duty trucks such as the Ford Super Duty® models do, however, come with extra camera systems and improved visibility.

Power

When it comes to actual power, nothing comes close to the Ford Super Duty® models. Light duty trucks have good engine options with excellent horsepower and torque ratings, but the real power is under the hood of the heavy-duty models. The Ford Super Duty® models, for example, can crank out 430 horsepower with the all-new, best-in-class 7.3-liter V8 engine.

Towing

Remember what we said about power? Heavy-duty trucks are better at towing and hauling, too. With the Ford F-350, for example, drivers have access to best-in-class towing capability (exact specifications not yet released). A fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing package is available, too.
