Choosing which new truck to buy is a major decision. There are a lot of factors to consider and it can be hard to keep track of all the details. To help give you a good start, we are going to compare the 2020 Ford F-150 to the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. We think by the end, you will realize why the F-150 is the best choice and has been part of the best-selling F-Series lineup for over 40 years.

Engine options and power

Both the F-150 and the Silverado 1500 gives buyers six powertrain options to choose from. The F-150 comes standard with a 3.3-liter V6 rated at 290 horsepower. This is more powerful than the Silverado 1500, which comes standard with a 4.3-liter V6 with 285 horsepower.

From there, the engine options on the F-150 just get more exciting. These include the available 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 that delivers 375 horsepower and a best-in-class gasoline torque rating of 470 lb-ft. There is also the impressive High-Output 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine that offers a massive best-in-class 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. This horsepower beats anything offered on the Silverado 1500. Its most powerful engine comes with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.

Finally, the 6.2-liter flex-fuel gas V8 is the standard engine in F-250 and F-350 models, optimized to deliver torque at lower RPMs. This V8 is paired with the TorqShift® G six-speed transmission. Whatever job you need done, the all-new Ford Super Duty® line of pickups has the power to do it.

Payload

One of the main reasons why many people choose a pickup truck is so they can use the bed to carry items. If this is what you plan to do with your new truck, you will want the F-150. It offers an impressive best-in-class payload rating of up to 3,270 pounds, when equipped with the available 5.0-liter V8 engine. As for the Silverado 1500, the most you will be able to load in its bed is 2,250 pounds. The F-150 beats it by more than 1,000 pounds.

Towing technology

Another reason to choose a pickup truck is for towing. The F-150 can make it easier to hitch up your trailer with the advanced, class-exclusive Pro Trailer Backup Assist™. With this feature, it can take a lot of the guesswork out of lining up your truck with your trailer. It uses the backup camera and guidelines to help you steer the F-150 into place with a simple turn of a knob. Rotate the knob in the direction you want the trailer to go and the truck will respond. You won’t find a feature like this on the Silverado 1500.

Safety technology

The Ford F-150 also works hard to keep you safe with the available Ford Co-Pilot360™ technology. All F-150 trucks come standard with at least some advanced safety features. The base XL model includes automatic high beams, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, a rearview camera, and Curve Control. Of these features, the base Silverado 1500 WT model only includes a rearview camera and stability control.

Other available safety features on the F-150 include BLIS® (blind spot information system) with Trailer Coverage, a 360-degree parking camera, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a Reverse Sensing System, and Hill Descent Control. With all of these features, the F-150 can help you feel more confident and protected on the road.

Fuel economy

If you are looking for a fuel-efficient truck, and you don’t want a diesel engine, the F-150 has a more fuel-efficient gasoline engine than the Silverado 1500. With the available turbocharged V6 engine, you can expect to get an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway and with an output of 325 horsepower. The most efficient engine on the Silverado 1500 is a turbocharged four-cylinder that offers an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. This engine only has an output of 310 horsepower.*
